The barns of Centralia
Katy and I drove to Centralia for a couple of days so she could attend a writer’s conference at Centralia College. This is her second year to attend this conference. While she was at the conference, I explored the rural countryside nearby. I found this lovely old barn on a hillside above the valley on North Fork Road. As I was painting, a woman came out on a golf cart to see what I was doing. She was delighted to find an artist at work, and I was happy to share my painting. Turns out that she lives in the barn. They renovated it and turned it into living space.
Just a short ways up North Fork Road I found this farm in a beautiful setting. The farmhouse was on the hill above the barn with horses grazing in the pasture. Several people stopped to see my painting and I enjoyed their conversations. The lower two-thirds of this painting got far more cluttered than I intended.
The next day I drove out Bunker Creek Road. This area is full of lovely old farms and farm buildings. I liked the shape of this barn, so I stopped by the side of the road to paint it.
I drove further out the road and found this lovely set of barns and outbuildings up a side road. As I was setting up to paint, a man in his sixties came out in, yes, a golf cart, and looked over my painting setup. He was very kind and we had a short conversation. He said, “You don’t see too many silos these days.” When I was done he came by again and I gave him my card.
About the yellow in the sky: I didn’t intend for that to look like a blazing sunny sky, but it certainly gave that effect. Actually it was cool and cloudy.
